According to the data provided by the Russian frozen fruit and vegetable market analysis compiled by BusinesStat, the sales volume of frozen fruit and vegetables in Russia increased by 12.9% in 2013-2017: from 310,000 tons to 350,000 tons. In 2015 alone, sales were down 10.3% from the previous year. In 2016 and 2017, the sales volume of frozen vegetables and fruits increased by 5.6% and 9.4% respectively.
Russia's frozen fruit and vegetable market is dependent on imports. BusinesStat estimates that the market share of Russian products in 2013-2017 was between 14-22%. However, in recent years, the Russian fruit and vegetable industry has shown signs of import substitution. From 2013 to 2017, Russia's frozen fruit and vegetable production increased by 55.6%, from 44,400 tons to 69,100 tons, with the largest growth in 2015 and 2016, with year-on-year increases of 22.4% and 26.9% respectively. In 2015, Russian imports of frozen fruits and vegetables fell by 12.7% compared to the previous year, and imports in 2016 almost remained at the 2015 level. The reason for this was the Russian food embargo, which prevented some former suppliers of frozen fruits and vegetables, notably Poland, from supplying products to Russia. As a result, in 2015-2016 Russian domestic companies made efforts to increase production.
It is predicted that the production of frozen vegetables and fruits in Russia will continue to grow at an annual rate of 8.2-11.2% in 2018-2022. Particularly promising are fruit and berry products, which can be used in the production of yogurt and other dairy products containing fillers. 2018-2022 Sales of frozen fruits and vegetables in Russia will continue to grow at an annual rate of 5,1-2,6%, and will reach 424,800 tons in 2022, exceeding 2017 sales by 21.3%.
